How Do I Improve My Home’s Air Quality?

Did you know that indoor air pollutant levels may be up to 100 times higher than outside levels? According to the EPA, indoor air quality is one of the top five environmental risks to public health. Since Americans spend almost 90% of their time indoors, learning the right steps to take to improve our indoor air quality is a must.

Worsening Allergies This Time of Year?

Indoor air quality tends to be worse in the winter because there is typically no flow of fresh air from the outside, meaning allergens stay trapped inside. Luckily, there are things you can do to restore the air quality in your home.

Change Filters

If you have a forced-air heating system, don’t forget to change the filters regularly! Airborne irritants like dust can recirculate through your home, but electrostatic filters can trap these particles.

Let the fresh air in.

Even in the cold months, it’s a good idea to open windows periodically to allow fresh air to move into the house. Also, move potential air contaminants out by using fans in the kitchen to remove cooking fumes.

Keep It Clean

A clean house is a healthy house! Good indoor hygiene can cut down on dust and pet dander, so when cleaning, you should focus on reducing these irritants.
  • Using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter, vacuum carpets and rugs one or two times per week. The less carpet, the better when it comes to the accumulation of allergens in your home.
  • Clean bedding, drapes, and other items that attract allergens—especially if you have pets. Don’t forget to wash your bedding in hot water to help kill germs. Dust mite–proof covers for pillows and mattresses are a good idea as well.
  • Clear clutter because it traps dust that can trigger an allergic reaction.
