Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Your Air Filter!
If your allergies are acting up, you’re not alone. Many factors in your home, from pet dander to lack of circulation, exacerbate allergy symptoms this time of year. Dust mites, mold, and other allergens found in your home’s AC filter can trigger allergy symptoms as well, so don’t suffer any longer.
Especially in the Boca Raton area, it’s important to keep your home free of common allergens like:
Dust & Dust Mites.
Did you know that the dust accumulating in your home may contain pet hair and dander, mold or pollen spores, and dust mite or even cockroach body parts and droppings? Dust mites are microscopic organisms that live in practically everything in your home, including beds, upholstered furniture, or any other fabric. These mites can trigger allergy symptoms due to the waste they create.
Mold.
The bathroom is notorious for mold growth. Mold needs moisture to grow, so you’ll frequently find it in damp places like the shower or around the bathroom vent. While South Florida homes are highly treasured, they are prone to mold growth due to the moist, humid climate.
Mold can be difficult to identify in your home because it isn’t always visible. It has the ability to grow wherever there is moisture — under floors, behind walls, even in your air ducts. As it grows, it releases airborne spores, which are another common cause of allergy symptoms.
Pollen.
In South Florida, pollen from different plants, trees, grasses, and more, bloom throughout the entire year, and our allergy season is longer than the rest of the countries. Pollen in the air and on the ground sticks to your clothes and shoes, which makes it easy to track it into the house after being outdoors. While we love fresh ocean air, open doors and windows also allow pollen to contaminate the air in your home.
Pet dander.
Just like us, most household pets like dogs and cats shed dead skin, known as dander, which can cause allergic reactions in many people.
You might be thinking that with so many factors contributing to allergy symptoms, it must be hard to get rid of them all. Thankfully, that’s not the case. A simple change of your A/C filter has the ability to reduce circulating dust, dander, mold spores, and more throughout your home. Think of your HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system as the lungs of your home, pushing air through the filters and ducts that run throughout each room. If the filters and ducts aren’t clean, the air you and your family breathe isn’t, either.
If changing your air conditioning filter is not enough, it’s important to know what to look for when considering a duct cleaning. We recommend looking for common indicators like:
- constant buildup of dust despite consistent cleaning
- if you suffer from allergy symptoms while in your home
- asthma that isn’t well-controlled
- if your house is 10+ years old – have your air ducts ever been cleaned?
